Enthusiasts in data science, machine learning and software development
will work together to find efficient solutions for a greener environment at the
WALTER GROUP HACKATHON SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS

Overview

Freight transports, delivery routes and logistics systems are key drivers of the European economy. They allow countries to work together across borders, achieve better results together and find efficient and sustainable solutions for the future through cooperation and collaboration. WALTER GROUP aims to foster this cooperation and brings together students, puplis, developers and scientists to demonstrate what we can achieve by joining forces.

đźšš  Competition

This hackathon is a team competition specifically for students and pupils. Together, we want to leverage practical applications in software development, data science and machine learning that can move materials, goods and products efficiently and sustainably across the EU. To this end, we will provide a simulated environment in the form of a digital twin of the main transport networks in which participants can program smart agents. Teams will be judged on efficiency and sustainability and the results will be shared publicly with the community. At the end of the day, the three winning teams will be nominated and receive prizes.

⏱ Timeline

The Hackathon will officially start at 9:30 o’clock and will happen online for remote participation and physically in the Hotel Andaz in Vienna (prior registration required). Doors will be open as early as 9:00 o’clock so that participants can exchange ideas and get to know each other in advance.

The challenge is divided into two parts. The first part will happen in the morning and will be focused on efficiency scores (e.g. how much cargo did trucks transport and how many empty kilometers did they accumulate). The second part will start after lunch and will introduce sustainability mechanics - optimising not only for freight transport but also for carbon emissions reduction.

After the challenge, the results of the teams will be evaluated and the winners will be awarded.

đź“© Registration

The registration will be open from 1 September 2024 until 10 October 2024. When registering you can apply for on-site or remote participation at the Hackathon venue in the Hotel Andaz in Vienna. As space is limited, we will let you know as soon as possible if we will be able to accommodate you on-site.

âś‹ How to participate?

  1. Register by clicking the button above or below and filling out the form.

  2. Join our Hackathon Slack Workspace
All communication before, during and after the event will happen there. We'll send you the link bevor the Hackathon via Email.

  3. Form a team (recommended team sizes 2-5 people)
Grab your friends and form a team with them since this is a team competion. The winning teams will be nominated and awarded prizes.

  4. On the day of the Hackathon
Check out the documentation we publish about the Hackathon simulation on 17 October on Slack and via email.
You will be provided with a barebones script which can serve as a template for your solution.
Participants need to push their script to a private GitHub repository and install our Hackathon GitHub App for that repository.
If you participate as a team, only one team member will need to setup this repository and can then invite their colleagues to collaborate. The simulation will automatically fetch your solution and will execute it in our sandbox environment.
